Weathering & Corrosion

Simulate sunlight/moisture/ corrosion for durability

What Is It?

Weathering and corrosion testing is the process of seeing how materials and products hold up against harsh environmental conditions over time. This helps ensure that a product will last and perform as expected, no matter the weather.

  • Sunlight: The sun’s UV rays can break down materials like plastics and paint, causing them to fade, crack, or become brittle over time.
  • Heat: High temperatures can cause materials to expand, while cold can cause them to contract. Repeated temperature changes can weaken a product and cause it to crack or warp.
  • Water: Rain, humidity, and moisture can lead to corrosion, especially on metals. This is a chemical process where materials break down, such as when rust forms on iron.

Who Needs This Testing?

Any industry that makes products used outdoors or in challenging environments benefits from weathering and corrosion testing. This ensures their products are reliable and safe for consumers.

  • Automotive: Car paints, trims, and parts are tested to resist sun damage, moisture, and road salt, ensuring vehicles remain safe and appealing.
  • Construction: Building materials like paints, plastics, and coatings need to withstand extreme weather to maintain their structural integrity and appearance over decades.
  • Plastics and Polymers: Plastic products, from garden furniture to electrical casings, must be tested to prevent them from becoming brittle or discolored by sunlight.

How Is The Testing Done?

Testing is done using specialized instruments in a controlled lab environment. These machines can recreate specific weather conditions with high accuracy to observe how a material reacts.

  • UV and Xenon Arc Testing: Powerful lamps are used to simulate the sun’s UV radiation and the full spectrum of sunlight. These tests check for color fading, cracking, and chalking.
  • Salt Spray Testing: Products are placed in a special chamber that mists them with saltwater. This simulates coastal environments or road salt to check for corrosion resistance.
  • Temperature and Humidity Cycling: Testers are used to rapidly change temperatures and humidity levels. This puts materials through extreme heat, cold, and moisture cycles to find weaknesses and ensure they can perform reliably.
