+ FAQs
What does the 5.7:1 distance-to-spot (D:S) ratio mean?
The 5.7:1 ratio means that the diameter of the area being measured (the “spot”) is 5.7 times smaller than the distance from the instrument to the surface. This larger ratio is beneficial for scanning large areas quickly and obtaining a stable, averaged temperature.
How is the PosiTector IRT different from the PosiTector DPM IR?
The PosiTector IRT is a dedicated surface temperature thermometer only. The PosiTector DPM IR is a more complex dew point meter that measures and calculates multiple climatic parameters, including surface temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, and dew point.
Can the PosiTector IRT be used to measure temperature on blasted steel?
Yes, it can. However, highly accurate results require the user to correctly adjust the emissivity setting since blasted steel can have a wide range of emissivity values. DeFelsko recommends adjusting the setting to a known temperature on a representative sample for best accuracy.
How is emissivity defined, and why is it important for infrared temperature measurement?
Emissivity is a material’s capacity to emit infrared energy compared to a perfect emitter (a black body). It is crucial because the thermometer measures this emitted energy; if the emissivity is set incorrectly, the displayed temperature will be inaccurate.
Is the PosiTector IRT compatible with other PosiTector probes?
Yes. As part of the PosiTector interchangeable platform, the IRT probe can be used with any Standard or Advanced PosiTector gage body, allowing the instrument to be instantly converted into a coating thickness gage, surface profile gage, or dew point meter simply by attaching a different probe.
