+ FAQs
Is the PosiTest PG suitable for non–metallic substrates like plastic or wood?
Yes, the PosiTest PG is a destructive measurement gauge that can measure coating thickness on any rigid substrate, including metal, wood, and plastic.
How do I measure the thickness of individual layers in a multi–coat system?
The PG cuts a precise V–groove through all layers. If the layers are of contrasting colors, you can use the 50x microscope to measure the width of each individual layer at the cut.
What do the different cutting tips (1x, 2x, 10x) represent?
The numbers refer to the magnification factor applied to the cut profile. A 1x tip is for the thickest coatings, while a 10x tip provides the highest resolution for very thin coatings.
Can the PosiTest PG be used on curved surfaces?
Yes, per ASTM D4138, the instrument can be used on flat or moderately curved surfaces. Pipes as small as 25 mm (1″) in diameter can be measured in the axial direction.
What is the process for determining the coating thickness?
After making a clean cut, you use the microscope to measure the width of the cut. This measured width is then multiplied by the conversion factor specific to the cutting tip used to yield the actual thickness.
